We tipped Seattle’s Barcelona : Branden, Brian and Rhett, as one to watch for this year’s CMJ festival so were more than excited to find out that they were up for recording a Secret Sound Shop session whilst they were in the city.
We met the guys near the CMJ press hub on 16th Street, and took a walk around Union Square in search of a location. After closely avoiding an attack from a ninja squirrel, we decided it would be safer to settle on a side street near to the park. The guys set up outside of Trinity Broadcasting Network and started off by performing ‘Hanging in a Void’, Rhett impressing us with his musical iPad abilities. The trio continued their jam with ‘Lesser Things’ a track from their first album Absolutes and were soon joined by an enthusiastic group of middle school kids who quickly formed an impromptu percussion session meets dance troupe.
To scale things back a little, we retreated inside, to CMJ HQ for an intimate recording of Brian performing the beautiful ‘Less Than Two’. After wrapping up, we head to Whole Foods (of course?) for post filming snacks and an awesome chat about the zombie apocalypse, marriage, horse trainers and James Blake.
We are excited to have posted our 30th video, and even more excited that Barcelona got to be the stars. Thank you Barcelona, Secret Sound Shop’s ever so brilliant #30.
